8 Tips for Making Relocation Easier

Every year, around 40 million Americans move. While only about 14% of the moves were across state lines, that’s still a sizable number!

Maybe you’re moving out of state soon, and you don’t know where to begin. What should you do, and when? You might be losing precious sleep over your upcoming move.

But relocating should be something fun and exciting, not stressful! It’s a new chapter in your life, after all.

To help you out, here are some tips that make moving out of state easier.

Start Early

You might think you have all the time in the world for moving. But the reality is, you can never start early enough!

Real-life often gets in the way. Whether it’s a sudden illness or injury, a flat tire, a burst pipe, or anything else, something random may throw a wrench in the works.

And when that happens, you want to make sure it won’t set back your moving plans so far that it’s impossible to get things done.

So as soon as you know you’re going to move, get started! It doesn’t hurt to anyway.

Have a Game Plan

Don’t just get started early without having a game plan in mind. Sit down with everyone involved (like your spouse) to discuss some important issues before relocating.

You might think you don’t have time to do this but make time. Investing a few hours into forming a game plan can be invaluable, as it’ll help move things along and save you time in the long run.

First of all, determine your moving budget. Make sure you factor in any time you have to take off to pack.

You’ll also want to come up with a moving checklist, in addition to packing and actually loading up the truck for the big day. This should include canceling services, changing addresses, renting storage units, and making travel arrangements. You should also make housing arrangements if needed (more on this later).

When you have a checklist, not only will you have a rough schedule to follow, but you’ll also ensure that you don’t forget to do anything important.

Get Rid of Clutter

Chances are, not everything needs to go to your new house. So get rid of the clutter before you even pack! This can save you lots of time.

Tackle one room at a time and sort things into piles for trashing, donating/selling, and keeping. You can even pack the things accordingly as you move along, so it’s not as monumental a task at the end.

As soon as you’re done sorting everything, throw away all your junk. If needed, hire a trash pickup.

Then, bring all the donate/sell items to the appropriate party. It’s easy to get rid of everything by just donating your unwanted things to a thrift shop.

Otherwise, you might have to list everything separately for sale, which is time-consuming. However, this can get you some extra cash for the move if you need it.

Have a Good Packing System

Don’t just throw things into boxes nilly-willy and then stuff the boxes in the corner of a room.

Instead, take some time to label all boxes and even color-code them by room. You should also start by packing the things you don’t need (such as off-season clothes). That way, they’re the first boxes in your old home and the first ones out at the new one.

Arrange for Furnished Housing

In the flurry of hectic and complicated moving plans, you might forget to even make housing arrangements.

Do yourself a favor and move into furnished corporate lodging from Team Housing Solutions. This type of housing includes things like furniture, housewares, and linens, which means you won’t have to pack, unpack, and arrange these things when you arrive.

Instead, you can take it easy and just unpack the necessities. You’ll be able to feel right at home instantly when you walk through the doors. The internet and cable TV are also already set up, so you won’t have to worry about that either!

Take It Slow Right After You’ve Moved In

Congratulations, you’ve moved in! You might want to ride the excitement of such a huge accomplishment, but it’s best if you take it slow, especially on the first day.

Unpack just the essentials and focus on the bedrooms and bathrooms first. That way, you’re able to shower and sleep comfortably for the first night.

Once you’ve rested up properly, then you can tackle unpacking everything else!

Say “Hi” to the Neighbors

No matter how long you’re planning on staying at your new place, it’s always a good idea to say “hi” to the neighbors. This will give you a better idea of what friendly faces are around, and you’ll have some contacts in case of emergency.

If you take the first step to say “hi,” this can help you fit in better. And who knows, you might click well with some neighbors and make some lifelong friends!

In any case, these people might help you get situated, which can be invaluable when you’re new to an area. If you don’t know a thing about your new city, then be sure to ask for some inside info!
